Ninja defuse, you really shouldn't hijack other people's threads, but there's no way to change UI elements like that without modifying hammer itself. If you receive an error while opening up Hammer with any config to create a new one (like with HL2DM as you mentioned) then you need to do a 'refresh game content' and 'reset game configurations' through the Source SDK first. gcf files it needs to load content from, so you can work with all the HL:S assets. Really, you don't have to do any back-breaking work the gameinfo will tell Hammer which. You can leave the default VMF directory alone, it's just where it will prompt you to save maps by default. Then you need to find the correct game paths in your \steamapps directory and point Hammer to them - Game executable directory should point to the directory containing hl2.exe (so it's probably steamapps\yourusername\half-life source), Game directory needs to point to the directory that contains a gameinfo.txt for HL:S (it's probably in steamapps\yourusername\half-life source\valve or something). You can leave the next several fields alone although you may want to change default texture to 1 (because HL:S textures are low-resolution compared to HL2/other source games and don't need to be scaled to 1/4). Under 'game data files' you need to 'add' and browse to the location of the HL:S FGD file.

Click on 'edit' and then 'add' and type in HL:S or whatever you want your configuration to be called. Open up Hammer in any configuration (HL2, HL2DM, whatever), go to options, game configurations. Really, it's easy to setup a configuration for HL:S.

I'm aware of what the SDK is, I've actually used it before, but it just never felt right. You're used to Hammer 3.5 it's not going to feel 'right' until you start using it It's really not as extreme of a technology leap as you're making it out to be if you want to experience something like that then maybe you should try making a Doom3 or Unreal mod or something.

I heard Source SDK is chock full of problems (too many updates that screw it up or something).Lies. And Decay is actually an exclusive, unlike Blue Shift that has been ported elsewhere (PC).Welcome to the SDK. The Dreamcast build going around was supposedly never optimized, which leads to a fairly low fps and more inconsistency due to not being the final build.

And the frame rate is smoother and more consistent on the PS2 release. The textures have also been refined further and the character models have a higher polygon count over the Dreamcast version. The dual analog stick is far better for the game then the single analog stick of the DC controller. The PS2 version also supports any USB mouse and keyboard and not just Dreamcast accessories. The saving is much more efficient space wise with the PS2 release and was never refined on the Dreamcast build everyone has. The improved digital features are the reason why Half-Life: Source is so popular among its players and has won over 50 Game of the year awards. It has been observed that this is exactly the reason why most gaming communities and online platforms recommend playing Half-Life: Source over the older Half Life version. The saving also isn't screwed up like on the Dreamcast when sometimes the VMU won't even be large enough for a save. There is absolutely no reason for a player, whether returning or new to not opt or Half-Life: Source at all. Sorry, but there's a massive improvement in load times for Half-Life on the PS2 release compared to the Dreamcast build, both in terms of length of save time and how numerous the saves are.

And if you're a Mac user, I hear the entire Half-Life series will be coming to Mac users pretty soon as well.

It's an amazing game and my favorite first person shooter, and both expansions are also excellent and worth playing through before moving on to Half-Life 2 and it's various episodes.Īnd any PC that virtually anyone is using for day to day use in 2010 can pretty much easily run it maxed out. In all honestly though, if you want the superior experience and really want to play through the Half-Life saga, spend the $10 or so that Half-Life 1, Blue Shift, and Opposing Forces (Which isn't available on consoles) costs on Steam and play through it there.

And it has the only console version of Blue Shift, a nice expansion pack that Half-Life recieved (Which was actually created first for the Dreamcast and only later ported to the PC). The only reason to burn Half-Life to cd-r to play on your Dreamcast is because it's free and neat to check it out. It isn't just a cooperative mode for Half-Life, it's a unique expansion pack with it's own storyline telling the story of two scientist, much like Blue Shift and Opposing Forces were. Also has the cooperative game of Decay, the only part of the Half-Life saga that PC owners never recieved (Although there's a homebrew remake of it available for PC). Superior controls due to twin analog sticks, faster frame rate, sharper and more detailed graphics, faster loading times, and more efficient saving. The PS2 port is better then the Dreamcast port.
